Claves / Rhythm Sticks
Two sticks played together. You would think that it's no big deal,
right? The most experienced leaders of ensembles are often in charge of these cleverly simple
instruments. The clave is the heartbeat of many latin styles of music including "Son," and, in
Australian Aboriginal cultures, rhythm sticks play important roles in communal music
making.

Wood Blocks
Made of wood or plastic, these are among some of the oldest percussion
instruments around. They add an organic flavor to the ensemble, and can really add to the beauty
and intensity of the rhythm!
